GERMAN E. CLÉNIN

Dr.med. German E. Clénin is a sports medicine physician from Switzerland. After graduating as a physician in 1993 at the University of Berne, he successfully finished his doctoral thesis in sports medicine and exercise physiology at the Federal Office of Sports in Magglingen and the University of Zurich. After training for several years in General Internal Medicine, General and Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Gynecology, and Dermatology, he headed the Swiss Olympic Medical Center and Human Performance Lab in Magglingen for four years, working with many different sport federations and sportsmen and women of all ages, including many of Switzerland’s top performing international athletes. Since 2007 he has been working in his own practice in the House of Sport in Ittigen/Berne, Switzerland. He works with athletes at all levels, from top international athletes performing at the Olympic Games and world championships, to weekend warriors and recreational athletes.

He has been and still is Medical Officer for the Swiss National teams of Swiss Orienteering (since 2002), Swiss Athletics (since 2013), and Swiss Ski Freestyle (since 2014). He was Chief Medical Officer for Swiss Cycling for 8 years and supported the Olympic Cross Country, Downhill, and Trial Swiss Mountain Biking teams for numerous European and world championships from 2005 to 2013. He was medical officer for the Swiss delegation at Beijing 2008, London 2012, PyoengChang 2018 and Beijing 2022 Olympic Games.

He is affiliated with the University of Berne and is actively involved in teaching medical students and junior doctors.

He was Director of the SEMS final exams from 2004 until 2014 and member of the committee of the Swiss Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine. From 2016 – 2022 he was the elected SEMS President.

He has particular interests in the fields of athletes’ health and performance, iron metabolism and iron deficiency, as well as exercise physiology and teaching.  He holds a postgraduate Master degree in Medical Education. He has published in the field of sports medicine, athletes’ health, and iron deficiency. He is published author of the book “Athletes’Health&Top Performance” (2016), translated into German “Gesund zur Top-Leistung” (2018).
